The Durham-born artist Norman Cornish has died at the age of 94. The last surviving Pitman Painter, Cornish began working down the
mines when he was 14 years old. In the 1930s he joined the Spennymoor Settlement, an arts and recreation centre, where he painted scenes of typically Northern industrial working-class life. A celebration of this great Northern artist will take place in the town of Spennymoor in September.
